Help me settle a bet. In David Bowie's Space Oddity "ground control" poses this question to Major Tom. "And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear?"

So, if anyone actually reads this thing that I work on every day then now is your chance to let me know.

Whose shirts does Major Tom wear? We have heard it asked a million times but have we considered the answer.

I always figured it was a nice Banlon shirt with a sort of sporty stripe thing going on.

to be honest, i always thought it was "and the papers want to know whose SHIRT you wear". as in the singular form and i thought they wanted to know what country or state he was loyal to. like which flag do you wave. now that i know the truth i a) like it better b) feel a little dumb c) don't think it really matters because he's never coming back and he'll never be able to cash in on the endorsement deals. poor tom.
